
The Crowd Control Unit is composed of approximately 100 volunteers from both the regular and reserve units of the department. These officers are tasked with the primary responsibility of responding to events where large amounts of people are expected to be, and with ensuring the safety of all involved in the event. This can include, but is not limited to, presidential visits, civil unrest, political demonstrations, union actions and demonstrations, disasters (natural or man –made) where security is needed, and protection of dignitaries of regional, national and international stature.
In a broader role, the CCU is responsible for providing regional and State mutual aid which can be part of a Mobile Field Force (MFF), as defined by the California State Office of Emergency Services.
