Overview  

The Assessment and Intake Center provides services for Live Scan fingerprinting, part of the positive identification for record checks conducted by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Caregiver applicants, SSA employees and volunteers are required to submit to Live Scan fingerprinting. Individuals can schedule an appointment at the Assessment Center for Live Scan fingerprinting. Only in emergency situations are walk-in applicants processed.

Live Scan fingerprinting may be scheduled:

  • Days: Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday
  • Hours: 12:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Who Can Live Scan  

Assessment Center social workers receive training on the Live Scan procedures and only social workers who are trained and certified are authorized to perform Live Scan fingerprinting. The training ensures that the Assessment Center social workers:

  • Perform fingerprinting for the correct purpose.
  • Are able to discuss information and procedures about Live Scan with Live Scan applicants.
  • Record fingerprinting information so that results are returned to the correct DFCS social worker.
  • Enter correct data into the Live Scan machine.

Who is Live Scanned  

Live Scan fingerprinting is completed for:

  • Prospective relative caregiver applicants.
  • Prospective non-relative extended family member caregiver applicants.
  • Foster home licensing applicants (Santa Clara County ).
  • Adoption home study applicants.
  • Adults living in the home of the above listed applicants.
  • Employees.
  • Volunteers and agency partners working within DFCS offices.

Live Scan Procedures  

When the applicant arrives at the Assessment Center to be fingerprinted, the Assessment Center staff person:

  • Verifies that the applicant made an appointment for fingerprinting.
  • Reviews Live Scan Referral (SCZ 152A) for completion.
  • Verifies the person's identity with a valid photographic identification (ID) such as:
    • Driver's License.
    • California ID.
    • Military ID.
    • Passport.
  • Explains Live Scan procedures.
  • Checks the applicant's fingers to ensure that:
    • Fingernails are not extremely long or curved, which may prevent proper contact with the printing platen.
    • Fingers are not bandaged or injured, which may require rescheduling of the appointment.
  • Logs onto the Live Scan machine with password.
  • Enters data from the Request for Live Scan Services (SCZ152A).
  • Performs the actual fingerprinting.
  • Enters the applicant information in the Applicant Scheduling Log binder.

Results of Live Scan fingerprinting are electronically sent to Live Scan clerical at the 373 W. Julian St. Office directly from DOJ.
