Substance Use Prevention Services (SUPS) are an essential component to the health and well-being of our community and play a critical role in the continuum of care that BHSD provides for Santa Clara County residents. SUPS prevention services are provided before the onset of abuse and are based on strategies designed to reduce or prevent substance use or abuse among individuals and to address community conditions that contribute to substance use related issues.
- SUPS includes addressing problems associated with alcohol and other drugs (AOD) use and abuse but do not include referral, treatment and recovery services.
- SUPS is a proactive multifaceted process involving a continuum of culturally appropriate prevention services which empowers individuals, families and communities to address life and environmental challenges by promoting safe and healthy behaviors and lifestyles.
- SUPS consists of a planned sequence of age-appropriate activities that, through the practice and application of evidence-based prevention strategies and programs, is intended to inform, educate, develop skills, alter risk behaviors and affect environmental factors.
The term “alcohol and other drugs” (AOD) includes but is not limited to alcohol, marijuana, illicit drugs, inhalants, prescription and over-the-counter medications.
