The Complete Census Count Steering Committee is dedicated to collaborating with local implementation partners across sectors to ensure 100% of people living in Santa Clara County participate in the 2020 Census. We will work together to ensure a safe community where everyone can participate in Census without fear.
Santa Clara County is home to a beautifully diverse community and every person living here, regardless of age or status, counts in the 2020 Census. Santa Clara County is the 9th hardest to count County in the United States. The upcoming Census is the first digital effort, where households can respond online. Even in Silicon Valley, a reliable and safe internet connection is not available to everyone. There are over 100 languages spoken in Santa Clara County, but the online Census will only be offered in 12 non-English languages. This will be a barrier to participation; however, the paper form presents an even larger barrier since it will only be printed in English and Spanish. Throughout the County, understanding of the Census varies and the Steering Committee is committed to increasing individuals' knowledge about the Census' importance. There is a general distrust of government and uncertainty about privacy/confidentiality. In our community, there is a strong sense of fear regarding the federal government and its recent actions. Many are concerned that Census data will expose their personal information, immigration status, and living situation (multi-generational homes, numerous families in a home, renting a nonconventional room, etc.).
