The education subcommittee will be working with a diverse group of individuals who span the various sectors – from 0-5 through college and adult education. Tailored messaging will be needed to effectively communicate with these groups. In Santa Clara County, there are approximately 280,000 students within the Office of Education and 16-17,000 adults in the consortium.
In 2010, 4% of children under the age of 5 were not counted, so this will require a special focus in the subcommittee’s work. For our community, the level of uncertainty and fear of safety will create a barrier to participation. The school cycle will present a challenge, since there is typically no communication from schools during the summer months. Outreach will be truncated, so priority for early funding would be helpful. There are fiscal challenges associated with outreach to our communities. County staff efforts to work with private schools and universities should be increased.
