COVID-19 Cases Dashboard

This data dashboard provides detailed information about cases and deaths from COVID-19 in Santa Clara County and is intended for informational purposes only.

New details added in early April include confirmed cases by city of residence and deaths by race/ethnicity. The County does not have complete or accurate racial/ethnic breakdowns of confirmed cases in Santa Clara County, as is true for all counties across California and at the state level. The County will release additional details on confirmed cases as they become available.

April 20, 2020 Update: The County of Santa Clara's COVID-19 cases dashboard has been updated with a new methodology for the dates of associated cases. Cases will now be reported by the date of specimen collection. Previously, data on the dashboard reflected new cases by the date that confirmed positive results were reported into the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE) system. This adjustment provides dates that more closely represent the timing of the spread of the virus in Santa Clara County. The update in methodology today does not change the general progression of our case counts over time, but moves up the dates by a few days to be closer to when individuals may be developing symptoms. Values for the most recent five days will likely increase as the results are received.​​

You may notice that the number of new cases from day to day might not always add up to the cumulative total of cases. This is because our quality control measures and those of the California Department of Public Health may determine a need for reclassification of some cases. These small adjustments are due to changes in results from inconclusive or pending, or duplications in results, and are normal occurrences in the day-to-day collection of complicated data.

Community trans​mission is believ​ed to be widespread throughout Santa Clara County. Limited testing capacity means case counts represent only a small portion of actual cases within each city.​​

Hospital Dashboard

In the event of disasters, hospitals and the healthcare system may face significant challenges. Surge planning is a regular, key component of every hospital’s emergency plan and response. As cases of COVID-19 continue to rise, hospitals are prepared for the increase in patient volume. One key component of surge planning is the ability to increase the total number of beds available in hospitals.

Data shown include the numbers of acute hospital beds (commonly referred to as “floor” or “med/surg”), intensive care unit beds, ventilators, and surge beds. Surge beds are the additional beds that are not normally used in a hospital but may be made available in the event of a mass event.

These data may vary greatly day to day as they are only accurate at the moment hospitals provide the data. Discharges, transfers, and deaths of patients occur throughout the day, potentially leading to wide variations in the numbers.

Data are provided by reporting hospitals and represent a snapshot of the hospitals census and capacity at that point in time. We will continue to provide updates to these data as they are made available.​ ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Laboratory Testing Dashboard

​​Laboratory testing for the novel coronavirus for residents of Santa Clara County are provided by commercial laboratories, academic laboratories, and the Public Health Laboratory. The Public Health Laboratory serves as the sentinel and bridging laboratory in an emerging infectious disease until commercial and academic laboratory testing becomes more widely available. The testing capacity in Santa Clara County is dependent on the ability of commercial and academic laboratories to rapidly scale.

This dashboard shows the overall total and daily testing volume for COVID-19 in Santa Clara County. Laboratory results for Santa Clara County residents are reported to the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE).​​

Long-Term Care Facility (LTCF) Dashboard

Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCFs) are a critical part of the continuum of health care. LTCFs include skilled nursing, independent living, assisted living and board and care facilities. Because LTCFs typically serve older individuals with chronic health conditions, residents of LTCFs are at greater risk of developing severe disease from COVID-19. Because the population served in LTCFs is particular vulnerable to severe disease and death, Public Health pays particular attention to these facilities with a specialized team focused on responding to cases and potential outbreaks. Facilities may access testing through commercial labs or academic labs, as well as the Public Health lab. The Public Health Department facilitates testing of all symptomatic residents and staff of skilled nursing facilities and other licensed facilities. When there are concerns about a possible outbreak, transmission in a facility, or risk to adequate staffing, the Public Health Department initiates an investigation into the facility, which may include additional symptom screening and more extensive testing. When there is a positive case identified in a skilled nursing facility in Santa Clara County, the Public Health Department identifies all individuals who may have come in contact with the case and the duration, frequency, and proximity of that contact to identify possible exposure to staff and residents. Guidance has been issued to all LTCFs facilities on COVID-19 control and prevention.

Update 5/5/20: Daily cumulative case counts were previously reported by date of symptom onset, excluding a subset that did not have an onset date. Excluding cases still under investigation, data by date are now reported by: date of symptom onset, date of specimen collection, or lab resulted date, whichever is earliest.​
