County of Santa Clara Health System to Open Large Vaccination Site in Partnership with Gilroy Unified School District

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 12, 2021

Vaccination site will be located at Gilroy High School and will advance the County’s efforts to increase vaccine access in the most impacted areas of the County

Santa Clara County, CA – County of Santa Clara and Gilroy Unified School District officials announced today that the County’s Health System will open a new large-scale appointment-only vaccination site at Gilroy High School, located at 750 W. 10th Street in Gilroy. The site is expected to open by the end of the month. The site is part of the County’s ongoing, expansive effort to ensure robust access to vaccine in the areas of the county with the highest rates of COVID-19. Gilroy is one of the most impacted communities in Santa Clara County; Gilroy residents face the highest case and positivity rates of any city in the county.

“Our County is operating one of the most effective vaccination programs in the State, and has made excellent progress in vaccinating the hardest hit regions of the County, including Gilroy,” said Mike Wasserman, President of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. “We are looking forward to opening this site, which will provide expanded access to vaccination for residents of Gilroy and the rest of the southern Santa Clara County.”

“We are pleased to partner with the County to increase access to vaccination in our community,” said Dr. Deborah Flores, Superintendent of the Gilroy Unified School District. “Getting every eligible resident vaccinated is a massive effort that requires everyone to do their part, and Gilroy Unified was ready and willing to answer the County’s request for assistance in opening a large vaccination clinic at Gilroy High School.”

The site will offer vaccinations by appointment only and will offer both evening and weekend appointments. The site will offer approximately 1,000 vaccinations per day, and if vaccine supplies allow, will increase to approximately 2,000 vaccinations per day.

“We are grateful to Gilroy Unified for allowing the County of Santa Clara Health System to use its facilities to expand our vaccination capacity and geographic reach into one of our most impacted communities,” said Dr. Jennifer Tong, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. “We are excited to build upon our existing capacity and outreach in Gilroy.”

Public health officials strongly advise everyone to continue to take steps to limit the spread of the virus and reduce strain on our health care systems. These actions include staying home as much as possible, wearing a mask when leaving home, limiting interactions with those outside your immediate household, keeping a physical distance of at least six feet apart, avoiding non-essential travel, and getting the COVID-19 vaccine when you are eligible.

Visit the County’s COVID-19 vaccine website, sccfreevax.org, for the latest updates on vaccine eligibility and distribution.
