Scott Strickland, Chief of Staff
Scott served as Cindy's Chief of Staff in 1999-2000 at the San Jose City Council. His experience includes over five years with Supervisors Kniss and Simitian and ten years with the California State Assembly. Scott served on the County Board of Education for eleven years. He is a graduate of Stanford University and the Georgetown University Law Center. He lives in downtown San Jose.

Maja Marjanovic, Director of Strategic Initiatives
Prior to joining Supervisor Chavez's Office, Maja worked for the United Nations and non-governmental organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkan region on a variety of issues such as women, peace and security, transitional justice, constitutional reform and public administration reform. Maja received her Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and her Bachelor's Degree from Macalester College.

Kathy Sutherland, Executive Assistant / Scheduler
Kathy is a lifelong resident of San Jose with deep community roots in District 2. She began serving her community as a classroom volunteer, was elected to the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative PAC, and served as Chief of Staff to Councilmember Nancy Pyle. Kathy has lived in the Delmas Park Neighborhood of downtown San Jose since 1980.

Beth Willon, Communications Director
Beth has deep ties to San Jose and Santa Clara County after living and working here twice. Beth has been a communicator her entire career in several states as either a print, radio or television journalist or communications director for political campaigns and politicians including Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi. Beth's multi-platform responsibilities include dealing with media requests, writing, social media, planning media/constituent events, newsletters and helping the people who live in Santa Clara County.

Victor Perez, Policy Aide
Victor Perez earned his bachelor’s from the University of California Berkeley in 2015 where he double majored in Political Science and Legal Studies, and minored in Spanish. Victor is a life-long resident of Santa Clara County’s District 2 and speaks Spanish.

Alexander Lin, MPP, Policy Aide
Alex earned his MPP from UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy, his BA in Political Science and Asian American Studies from UC Berkeley, and his AA in Liberal Arts from De Anza College. Between undergraduate and graduate school, Alex served for three years as Congressional Staff Assistant to U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren. He also served as a consultant to Oakland's Office of the City Administrator and interned for the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Alex lives in Sunnyvale and speaks Cantonese and Mandarin.

Kathy Truong, Policy Aide
Kathy served four years with Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren strategizing policies, events and constituent casework as a Congressional Aide and Scheduler. Prior to that, she was at the International Children Assistance Network leading educational and empowering workshops for youth, and advocating and improving services for low income communities through organized forums on issues affecting women and children, family health and human trafficking in the Bay Area and Vietnam. Kathy is the Professional Development Chair for the Bay Area Asian Pacific American Legislative Staffers (BAAPALS) network and earned her Bachelor's in Public Health Sciences from UC Irvine. Kathy speaks Vietnamese and lives in San Jose.

Amy Nguyen, Policy Aide
Amy has had dedicated her career to public service. Right out of law school, she went abroad to provide support to Vietnamese refugees and human rights defenders as the Congressional liaison, human rights advocate, and refugee attorney for an international human rights organization focusing on resettling stateless Vietnamese refugees in Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines. After three years abroad, Amy returned to San Jose and served as the Development Director at the Asian Law Alliance to support low-income community members get access to legal services. She continues to be actively involved in the community as a Board Member of the Vietnamese American Roundtable, providing advocacy, education, and outreach to communities in need. Amy received her J.D. from Santa Clara Law, M.A. in Economics at the University of South Carolina, B.A. in Ethnic Studies and B.A. in Economics from the University of California, San Diego.

Joan Rivas-Cosby, Board Aide
Joan has had a longtime career of administrative support in the industries of telecommunication, hospitality and labor before joining the office in 2015. She is very active in community organizations seeking to improve quality of life issues in her neighborhood and throughout the city. Joan serves as Chair for CommUniverCity San Jose and Friends of Five Wounds Trail as well as Past Chair for the District 3 Community Leadership Council. Joan lives in the Olinder neighborhood near Downtown San Jose.
