The Bureau of Investigation includes 86 sworn peace officers
that have the same statutory authority as police officers. These include the
Chief Investigator, Assistant Chief Investigator, and six Supervising Criminal
Investigators, who supervise various units within the Bureau. Additionally, the Bureau has a number of civilian staff that provide process
service and support functions for the District Attorney’s Office.
The mission of the Bureau of Investigation is to provide
quality and timely investigation and support for the prosecutorial functions of the District Attorney’s Office. Generally, the Bureau conducts follow-up
investigations on cases submitted to the District Attorney by local law
enforcement agencies and other county departments, such as serious felony
cases, homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, gang cases, narcotics, arson, and
other major cases. District Attorney Investigators also assist other law
enforcement agencies where assistance, staffing, or specific expertise may be
desired.
The Bureau also assumes original jurisdiction and is the
primary investigative agency in a wide variety of economic crime cases
including real estate fraud, major fraud, consumer fraud, elder financial
fraud, worker’s compensation fraud, health/long-term disability fraud and auto
fraud. Additionally, the Bureau is the primary investigative agency for
parental child abductions, Election Code violations, crimes committed by public
officials, Fair Political Practices Act violations, Corporation Code violations,
environmental health violations, and high-tech crime.
