On Friday, December 7, 2007 the local United States Marine Corps Reserve made its annual visit to the Industries shop at the Elmwood Correctional Facility. With various members of the news media in attendance, First Sgt. David Lee accepted approximately 300 inmate-made wooden toys for distribution to needy children in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Chief Edward Flores commended the inmates and Milpitas Adult Education instructors Gene Medlock and John Del Conte for their commitment to producing quality toys that not only will last, but are child-safe because they contain no lead products. In the seven years that formal ceremonies have been held for Toys for Tots, the Department has donated approximately 2,800 hand-crafted wooden toys. "We've done quite a few toy pick ups and we've seen a lot of generous people but that's the most moving for me," Sgt. Lee said. "It's really like Santa's workshop."
