Student Internship Program - For Students

View Information for Managers

Student Interns assist professional and technical employees in the performance of their duties under close supervision.  The intern’s specific tasks vary depending on the Agency/Department to which they are assigned.  Student Interns can be used throughout the calendar year depending on  the needs of the department.  There are four (4) levels of student internship, based on educational levels rather than job duties.  The four levels are:
Student Intern -  Level I:
  • High school students enrolled in regular high school classes
  • Those enrolled in an alternative vocational high school
  • Students working toward high school equivalency
Student Intern - Level II:
  • Freshman or Sophomore year college students
  • Community college students
  • Vocational school students who have completed high school
Student Intern - Level III:
  • Junior or Senior year college students
  • Student Interns at this level must work in their chosen field of study
Student Intern - Level IV:
  • Professional and graduate school students
  • Student Interns at this level must work in their chosen field of study
In order to qualify for the Student Intern classifications, a student must:
  • Have  a legal right to work in the United States
  • Individuals under eighteen will require a work permit, which may be obtained through the high school counselor or the Employment Development Department (EDD)
  • Be enrolled in an accredited institution or a school licensed by a state agency or have graduated from such an institution or school within the last six months
  • Have an overall grade point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale
  • Submit a completed County job application for employment
  • May be required to pass a physical examination
Pay Structure
The student intern classifications are established on a broad range. Since the generic intern classifications would be used to hire into a variety of job families, a broad salary range allows the opportunity to set pay appropriate to the job family. Pay ranges are as follows:

  • Student Intern, Level II      $16.42 - $19.97 / hour

  • Student Intern, Level III     $20.53 - $24.95 / hour

  • Student Intern, Level IV    $25.41 - $30.89 / hour
