Is there an Office of LGBTQ Affairs for every County?

Having opened in 2016, The County of Santa Clara Office of LGBTQ Affairs was the first and only county-level Office of LGBTQ Affairs of its kind in the state of California and in the nation, with oversight of county-related work under the Office of the County Executive. It is now one of two county-level offices.

Union County’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, under the Department of Economic Development, was established by the Freeholder Board in 2018. It is the only county government office of its kind in the State of New Jersey.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms introduced The City of Atlanta Mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Board along with the City of Atlanta’s first-ever full time LGBTQ Affairs Coordinator.

Created in 2008 by mayoral executive order, the City of Philadelphia Office of LGBT Affairs became a permanent part of the City’s charter in 2015.

The District of Columbia Mayor’s Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Affairs (LGBTQ) is a permanent, cabinet-level office within the Office of Community Affairs in the Executive Office of the Mayor, established by statute in 2006 to address the important concerns of the District's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents.

Although San Mateo County does not have a particular office dedicated to LGBTQ affairs, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution in 2014 to establish California’s first county or city comission focused on the needs of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer (LGBTQ) Community.​​​

How long has The Office of LGBTQ Affairs existed?

The Office of LGBTQ Affairs was passed by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors on March 24, 2015, as a referral item introduced by former Supervisor Ken Yeager.

The Office of LGBTQ Affairs opened in late January of 2016, with two full-time staff members.​

Does The Office of LGBTQ Affairs organize the LGBTQ Pride Parade and Festival?

​No, Silicon Valley Pride is the organization that produces and organizes the annual Silicon Valley Pride Parade and Festival. The Office of LGBTQ Affairs does participate annually in both the Parade and has an information table at the Festival. The Office of LGBTQ Affairs coordinates various County of Santa Clara departments and employee presence in the festival and parade. Is The Office of LGBTQ Affairs a community space?

The Office of LGBTQ Affairs is a government office; it does take walk-in appointments.  Although the Office is not a community center, we do frequently work with local LGBTQ community spaces and are happy to make referrals and connect community members to any resources. We are also happy to provide case-by-case assistance.​

Is The Office of LGBTQ Affairs a government office?

Yes. The Office of LGBTQ Affairs is one of the offices within the Division of Equity and Social Justice. It is a policy office within the County Executive’s Office for The County of Santa Clara. ​
Where does your funding come from?

The Office of LGBTQ Affairs is funded primarily from the County of Santa Clara general fund. The County of Santa Clara releases a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) that details both revenues and expenditures. You can review the CAFR at Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.​​
Are you able to provide consultation to my workplace/community around a specific situation or challenge we are facing?

The Office of LGBTQ Affairs is committed to increasing the number of communities and workplaces practicing LGBTQ cultural humility. We achieve this by providing consultation to internal County departments and connecting non-County entities with professional consultants and community leaders.

As an office, we are committed to supporting your community by connecting you with resources and educational experiences that will help you meet your goals. Please complete the request for training form so we can help determine a pathway we believe will work for you.​​​​

What services does The Office of LGBTQ Affairs provide?

Depending on the scope of the request, our office may be able to provide training, case-specific assistance, cross-departmental best practices, external relations, communications, resources development, community engagement and mobilization, and measuring progress. Do you provide presentations, trainings, keynote addresses, or workshops? If so, where do I sign up?

The Office of LGBTQ Affairs is committed to supporting your community by connecting you with resources and educational experiences that will help you meet your goals. We design specialized training and consulting efforts for internal County departments and offices housed within The County of Santa Clara. Additionally, we connect non-government organizations and service providers with professional trainers and consultants to help ensure you can meet your goals regarding LGBTQ equity and inclusion.

We are happy to share about the work we are doing with your group or organization. By completing the request for training form​, we can garner the necessary information to offer a pathway we believe will work for you.​​​

A public space that I am a part of (school, homeless shelter, foster care home) is not LGBTQ inclusive, how can you help me?

Where can I get the most recent research and statistics about the LGBTQ health status in Santa Clara County?

The County of Santa Clara conducted an LGBTQ community health assessment in 2013 and compiled the results into the Status of LGBTQ Health 2013 Report which can be found here on our website. The report includes information on physical health and mental health as well as some information on social determinants of health such as housing and employment.​
