SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.—This week, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors approved to lease a 5,920 square feet facility at Reid Hillview Airport to the San Jose State University Aeronautics Program. The lease will generate $3,125 per month to the County’s Airport Enterprise Fund.
“Leasing the Reid Hillview Airport property to San Jose State University will bring extra revenue to the County and keep impacts to the community at a minimal level,” said Supervisor Dave Cortese, District 3, who played an instrumental role in bringing the two organizations together. “We are also glad to help further the academic mission of San Jose State University.”
“I support this lease because no additional flights are a part of the deal and the University’s program needs a home,” said Supervisor George Shirakawa, who represents the neighborhood surrounding the airport. “I’m glad it worked out.”
The leased area is located on Swift Avenue at the Reid Hillview Airport and includes a 5,058 square foot hangar and an 862 square foot office space. The hangar will be used to house several aircraft and engines that are used solely as static training aids. There is no actual flight activity associated with the Aeronautics Program. The aircraft are currently located at Mineta San Jose International Airport and will be disassembled and trucked to Reid Hillview Airport.
“San Jose State is very excited about the opportunity to move our aviation program to Reid-Hillview Airport,” said Larry Carr, SJSU Associate Vice President for Public Affairs. “The facility will keep the department intact and provide for future growth.”
San Jose State University's aviation program began as part of the national effort to train civilian pilots in preparation for World War II. The University has had a 50-year lease with Mineta San Jose International Airport for a five-acre property on Coleman Avenue at a fixed price of $2,800 a year. The leased ended in May 2010. The airport decided not to renew the lease and San Jose State University started to look for a new site for its Aeronautics Program earlier this year. In January 2010, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors authorized Roads and Airports Department to negotiate a lease with San Jose State University.
“I am glad that the Board approved the lease,” said Carl Honaker, Director of County Airports. “The lease creates a win-win situation for both the airport and the University.”
The Reid Hillview Airport property will be leased for $3,125 per month with annual Consumer Price Index adjustments for the 10-year period from June 22, 2010 to June 21, 2020, followed by two five-year lease renewal options.
