The County of Santa Clara announced today that it has reached an agreement with Plaintiff Christopher Knapp for $500,000 in Santa Clara County Superior Court, Case No. 1-09-CV-151628. This case was the last of the Stevens Canyon cases. The Stevens Canyon cases involved the deaths of bicyclists Matthew Peterson and Kristy Gough, and injuries to bicyclist Christopher Knapp, when a Santa Clara County Sheriff's patrol vehicle crossed the double-yellow line on Stevens Canyon Road in Cupertino and hit the three riders in March 2008.
The County and the deputy driving the patrol vehicle publicly acknowledged responsibility for this tragic accident and have made every effort to reasonably compensate all accident victims. This final settlement does not directly impact the County’s current budget, as the $500,000 will be paid by excess insurance carriers.
The County settled the wrongful death claims of John and Betty Peterson for their son ($2,300,000) and of Karen Clarkson ($1,200,000) and Rip Gough ($800,000) for their daughter. This left only the personal injury claim of Christopher Knapp which has now settled for $500,000. As a result of the accident, Christopher Knapp was seen at Stanford Hospital for left arm and right leg fractures. He now resides in Germany.
