Dine Out for Meals on Wheels to Benefit Santa Clara County Senior Nutrition Program

Residents are Encouraged to Support First of Its Kind Effort on November 9

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA - For the first time ever, seven Bay Area counties have joined forces in an innovative effort to raise awareness and much needed funding for their own Meals on Wheels programs. County of Santa Clara officials are encouraging residents and community leaders to support Bay Area Dine Out for Meals on Wheels on Tuesday, November 9, 2010.

“Counties continue to look for ways to maintain services for our seniors,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor George Shirakawa, Vice Chair of the Board’s Children, Seniors and Families Committee. “It certainly takes more than one day to help end senior hunger, but by finding ways to get involved, like dining out for the cause, we can make a difference.”

To raise awareness and show public support for the County’s Meals on Wheel Program, Supervisor Shirakawa and his entire staff will have lunch together at Amici’s East Coast Pizzeria, 225 W. Santa Clara Street in San José. Amici’s is one of more than 30 restaurants in Santa Clara County and one of hundreds throughout the Bay Area that committed to donate 10 percent of the value of the November 9 bills from those dining, to local Meals on Wheels Programs. Residents are encouraged to bring coworkers, family and friends for lunch or dinner at listed restaurants on November 9, or to donate to their local Meals on Wheels Program.

“As the safety net continues to shrink and we experience an increase in calls requesting services, we have to turn to our own communities for support, said Will Lightbourne, Director of Santa Clara County’s Social Services Agency. “Meals on Wheels recipients do not have other nutrition alternatives. This service provides them with crucial lifeline assistance when they do not have access to transportation or to other resources. We thank everyone who supports our efforts to serve communities in need.”

Meals on Wheels programs provide home-delivered meals, to homebound seniors. Combined, Meals on Wheels organizations throughout the Bay Area provide nearly 3 million meals each year to over 8,500 seniors in local communities in need of hot, nutritious meals, daily safety and wellness check, companion and supportive services each day.

In Santa Clara County alone, 1,414 seniors participated in the Meals on Wheels program during Fiscal Year 2009-2010, and 609,383 meals were served.
