Santa Clara County’s newest Supervisor, Mike Wasserman, was sworn in to office on January 31, at the County of Santa Clara Government Center before more than 500 local elected officials, family, friends, and members of the community. Supervisor Wasserman was administered the Oath of Office by Chair of the Santa Clara Valley Water District Don Gage. County Assessor Larry Stone, San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce President Pat Dando, and Calvary Church Pastor Bob Thomas also made remarks.
Supervisor Wasserman, District 1, acknowledged the County’s fiscal challenges. “The biggest hurdle facing us now is an estimated $200-$250 million budget deficit,” said Wasserman. “After 10 years of budget cuts, each year the cuts get tougher, the cuts go deeper, and are more painful.”
“…One of my goals is putting an end to the deficit cycle,” he continued. “The health and safety of our residents depend on the financial stability of County government. I look forward to working with my colleagues, the administration, the employees, and the private sector to develop and implement long-term solutions, so that we can avoid round after round of even harsher cuts. We owe it to the public we serve, and to our employees.” Previously, Wasserman described the need for a comprehensive attrition plan and a thorough evaluation of compensation offered to future employees.
County Assessor Larry Stone praised Supervisor Wasserman’s accomplishments and abilities. “Mike is open, honest, and committed to performance-based government. He isn’t afraid to take risks. He has a track record for demanding accountability and performance management from employees. He is the right man at the right time for this job.”
“Mike is a successful businessman and that will be very helpful as he is working with businesses throughout Santa Clara County,” remarked Chamber of Commerce President Pat Dando. “Mike has integrity, is honest and hard-working. He brings people together to get things done. He is always looking for a better way to do things.”
