Our History

The Office of Women's Policy is celebrating 20 years of working towards gender equity in Santa Clara County!

Developed in the spirit of cooperation between the County and the community, the Office of Women’s Policy was created in 1998 to identify and address current and emerging issues for women and girls. We strive for gender equity so that everyone has the opportunity to thrive. The award-winning work of the Office of Women’s Policy is diverse, complex, cross-systems and innovative. OWP works with stakeholders within the County and at the local, state and federal levels as well as our greater Silicon Valley community to ensure the needs of women and girls are being met.

A real asset of our department is our connection with the community.  We work with four commissions to study issues that impact women, including the Human Trafficking Commission and Intimate Partner Violence Blue Ribbon Task Force, the Commission on the Status of Women, and the Domestic Violence Council.  These partnerships have resulted in policy changes, award-winning research, and public trainings that benefit the entire community.

Over the years, our staff has grown from one to seven, our name has changed three times, but our mission has remained focused on improving the lives of women and girls in Santa Clara County. We have changed the way the do our work, and have recently become a part of the County's Social Justice and Equity Division.

The year 2018 marks 20 years of making a difference in our commuinity; we are looking forward to many, many more.
