Get Involved with Women 2020

Nearly 100 years since women won the right to vote in the United States, our government and society have yet to deliver on the implicit promise of women’s full equality in our democracy. The County of Santa Clara believes that the best way to honor this historic anniversary is through concrete action to close the gap between that promise and the current reality through Women 2020.

The County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors established the Women’s Equality 2020 Leadership Council. The purpose of the Leadership Council is to

  • Identify strategies to advance women’s equality, making recommendations to the Board of Supervisors, and
  • Provide input and planning for activities relating to the Women’s Suffrage Anniversary.

The Office of Women’s Policy will support the Women's Equality 2020 Leadership Council by co-chairing Women's Equality 2020 Work Groups with community members and leaders to move the needle here in our own Silicon Valley. These will serve as spaces for deep dialogue, creative thinking to inform the Leadership Council, Office of Women’s Policy, and Board of Supervisors, and also to actively engage community involvement and civic participation in non traditional ways. To get involved or learn more about the Women's Equality 2020 Work Groups, please email us at we2020@ceo.sccgov.org

All meetings will occur on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30pm in rotating locations throughout the County.  A tentative meeting schedule has been set:

  • September 12, 2018
  • October 10, 2018

  • January 9, 2019
  • March 13, 2019
  • May 8, 2019

  • January 8, 2020
  • May 5, 2020
  • August 12, 2020
  • December 9, 2020

The primary role of the Leadership Council will be to set broad direction and to finalize and approve recommendations. The Office of Women's Policy will coordinate and host public events, co-chair Women's Equality 2020 Work Groups, and provide other opportunities to allow members of the public to give input on the work of the Leadership Council. It is possible that the Leadership Council will have an opportunity to allocate funding or make funding recommendations to the Board of Supervisors. Due to conflicts-of-interest laws, if a Leadership Council member participates in Leadership Council discussions regarding specific funding allocations, specific funding recommendations, or specific programmatic recommendations (e.g., recommending specific services or organizations), the Leadership Council member and the organization the member represents may be precluded from seeking or receiving the resulting funding. General discussions of policy priorities or policy recommendations typically will not present a conflict, but the Leadership Council members will need to consult with County Counsel if there are any questions regarding these issues. The Leadership Council will attempt to reduce the potential for conflicts of interest, but there may be circumstances in which a conflict cannot be avoided, and the Leadership Council member and the organization the member represents would be precluded from a particular funding opportunity.

The deadline to submit applications for the Women’s Equality 2020 Leadership Council is August 6. The Office of the County Executive will review all complete applications and select 17 organizational representatives to nominate for appointment to the Council. The selection will be based on the considerations laid out in the framework approved by the Board on May 8, 2018, and described in the Resolution adopted by the Board on June 19, 2018. The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the final appointments in August 2018.

Note: It is not possible to save partially completed applications. We highly recommend drafting your answers in a separate document and then copying and pasting them into the application when you have time to complete and submit the entire application during one session. Thank you.
