Let Santa Clara County Parks bring your nature and history lessons to life!
We offer a variety of nature and history programs for school groups. You can take part in a guided field trip program at a local County park or request park staff visit your school through our classroom outreach program. We also a variety of classroom teaching kits available for loan.
 

Guided Field Trip Programs

These field trip programs led by park interpretive staff take place onsite in our County Parks and are correlated with Common Core and/or Next Generation Science standards. Most sites can accommodate up to 35 students per field trip date. Larger groups may be accommodated on occasion, pending the availability of additional staff and/or volunteers.
 

Chitactac School Field Trip Program

Target Grade Level(s): 3rd
Maximum Number of Students: 35
Program Duration: 2.5 hours
Program Fee: $50 (Title 1 schools receive a 50% discount)
Overview: Students will learn about the local tribal region by exploring ways in which the Amah Mustun utilized the natural resources along Uvas Creek for thousands of years. Students will explore the park through activity stations focused on wildlife and hunting, native plants and their uses, and life in the Chitactac village community. Note: The field trip curriculum has been updated for the 2016-2017 school year to incorporate connections to Next Generation Science Standards.

Bernal Ranch School Field Trip Program

Target Grade Level(s): 4th
Maximum Number of Students: 35
Program Duration: 2.5 hours
Program Fee: $50 (Title 1 schools receive a 50% discount)
Overview: A visit to the Ranch immerses students in the realities of living and working on a family ranch in the 1800s. Park staff will take students back in time with activities and a tour of the restored ranch house, barn, garden, and/or the Santa Teresa spring.

New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum School Field Trip Program

Target Grade Level(s): 4th
Maximum Number of Students: 35
Program Duration: 2.5 hours
Program Fee: $50 (Title 1 schools receive a 50% discount)
Overview: Park staff illustrates the story of mercury mining and its importance to the gold rush and local mining communities through a museum tour and activities.

Nature Hikes in County Parks

Location:  various parks
Maximum Number of Students: 35
Program Duration: ½ to 2 hours
Program Fee: $40/hour (Title 1 schools receive a 50% discount)
Overview: Nature hikes and Creek Walks may be available on a limited basis and customized to focus on Animal Homes, Adaptations, Life Cycles, Earth Science, or Healthy Creeks.

Self-Guided Tours of the Parks

Individuals and groups may conduct a self-guided park visit during open hours. However, groups of 10 or more are advised to contact the park interpretive staff in advance at 408-918-7770 or interp@prk.sccgov.org to find out if their activities may conflict with a previously scheduled group visit or event.
 

Classroom Outreach Programs

Location: School sites throughout Santa Clara County
Target Grade Level(s): K-5
Maximum Number of Students: 35
Program Duration: ½ to 1 hour
Program Fee: $50/hour (Title 1 schools receive a 50% discount)
Overview: Teachers can request a classroom visit by a park interpreter for a half-hour or 1-hour presentation that connects to state content standards and incorporates hands-on activities. Teachers may choose the Animal Habitats, Adaptable Animals, or Magical Metamorphosis program. Custom programs may be available on a limited basis.

Classroom Teaching Kits & Teacher’s Activity Guides

Teaching kits are available throughout the year for a variety of topics. To reserve your teaching kit, call (408)918-7770 or email interp@prk.sccgov.org. Kits are available for up to two weeks at a time. Cost is $10 per week.
Teacher’s Activity Guides are designed to support learning, before, during, and after park field trip programs. Guides are currently being updated to better correlate with Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core. Teachers can access the most recent versions of activity guides at the links below:
