Mandatory Influenza Vaccination or Masking of Health CareWorkers to resume on November 1, 2018 – Health Officer Order from 2012 Remains in Effect

In July 2012, Dr. Marty Fenstersheib issued a Health Officer order mandating that all healthcare facilities in Santa Clara County require their health care workers (HCWs) to receive an annual influenza vaccination or, if they declined, to wear a mask during the influenza season. That order is ongoing and applies to each influenza season (www.sccphd.org/vax-mask-memo).

For the purposes of the Order, the influenza season is defined as November 1 to March 31 of the following year. As stated in the Order, I may extend the duration of the order beyond March 31 if influenza surveillance data demonstrate an unusually late peak and/or continued widespread influenza activity in the spring.

Most acute care hospitals in Santa Clara County reported that influenza vaccination rates among their health care workers increased to over 90% after this order was implemented.
