How to Register to Vote

Who Can Register to Vote?

You can register to vote in California if you are: 

  • At least 18 years old by Election Day
  • A US Citizen
  • A California resident
  • Not currently imprisoned or on parole for a felony (more information for individuals with criminal convictions or detained in jail or prison)
  • Not found mentally incompetent by court action

Paper registration forms are available at the Registrar of Voters' Office, U.S. Post Offices, Public Libraries, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and other government offices.
Signed & completed forms must be returned in person or by mail. They cannot be faxed or e-mailed.
