Bike to School Day

Santa Clara County Celebrates the First Inaugural National Bike to School Day on May 9, 2012

(Santa Clara County, CA) - Traffic Safe Communities Network in Santa Clara County geared up to join communities across the country in the first-ever National Bike to School Day on May 9th, 2012. The inaugural event was the first opportunity, for Santa Clara County elementary and middle schools, to join hundreds of students across the nation to bike and walk to school together on the same day.

Some highlights from the event included:​

Cumberland Elementary - Student volunteers decorated their school's bike rack, passed out stickers to bikers and walkers, and chalked "Bike to School Day" messages around the campus.  There were over 75 bikes at the school. 

Sunnyvale Middle School - Student volunteers decorated their school's bike racks, and had approximately about 150 bike riders.
Laurelwood Elementary - Student decorated their school's bike racks and had an outstanding 276 bikers come to school.
Braly Elementary - Student Council students decorated the bike rack beautifully and many others participated in the Bike to School Day event.

Ponderosa Elementary - Students participated in the bike rack decorating contest and had about 75 bike riders.

Cherry Chase Elementary - Students participated in the bike rack decorating contest. A parent volunteer stated, “The kids had great fun stamping, stenciling and putting this together." There were about 25 bikes crammed onto the rack, with another dozen or so, in the overflow parking area (not counting parents' bikes). 

Olinder Elementary - Bike racks were decorated by Public Health staff.
