Gilroy Community Health Day on Saturday, October 6, 2012
October 1, 2012
Gilroy Community Health Day is a free health education and screening event that takes place during Binational Health Week. The event focuses on improving the health of south Santa Clara County residents, many who are Latino and who suffer disproportionally from poverty, violence, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, and tobacco and alcohol use. The event targets families that are medically uninsured or underinsured and approximately 95% of attendees are monolingual Spanish speakers.
Prevention is an important component of this event, and attendees receive language and culturally competent health education on chronic disease prevention and community resources. Many of these families depend on this event for their annual diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressures evaluations.
Activities for children, entertainment for all ages and raffles make this a fun event for all participants.
