Visiting an Inmate at the Main Jail

The Main Jail is located at 150 W. Hedding Street, San Jose, California 95110 at the intersection with San Pedro Street. The complex is approximately one block west of North First Street and one block east of Highway 87, in downtown San Jose.​

GENERAL RULES FOR VISITING INMATES

Visiting times and days: 

·         Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday @ 8:10 am, 9:20 am, 10:30 am,

2:00 pm, 3:10 pm, 4:20 pm.

·         Saturday and Sunday @ 7:00 am, 8:10 am, 9:20 am, 10:30 am, 2:00 pm,

3:10 pm, 4:20 pm.

  • Visits are accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Visits may be cancelled without prior notice due to facility emergencies or when an inmate has been relocated to another housing unit. If relocation occurs, visitors may reschedule another visit at the visiting desk or online via the OVR (Online Visiting Registration) system.
  • Inmates may have two 60-minute visits per week.
  • Walk-in visitors will be accepted.  If time and workload permits, the Visiting CSA may process registration applications and sign up visitors for a same-day visit.  However, there is no guarantee the registration approval process will be completed.
  • All visitors must check in together 30 minutes before the scheduled visit and are required to present valid photo identification. Up to two (2) adults may visit, but the visit will be split into one half-hour for each (one visitor at a time). 
  • If a visitor is late, the visit may be cancelled. Missing or cancelling a scheduled visit counts as having a visit. 
  • Any changes to a scheduled visit can ONLY be made by the person who originally scheduled the visit.  For example, a second visitor CANNOT change the visiting time, cancel a visit or replace the original visitor with another person.
  • Adult visitors and the inmates' or the visitors' children may visit. Any reasonable number of dependent children may visit as long as they are constantly supervised and remain well behaved. If you cannot control your children, your visit will be terminated. An original and/or notarized birth certificate is required for each child at the time of visit. Children who are 18 years or older will be counted as adults.
  • Inmates will not be eligible for a visit if he or she has lost his privilege as a result of any disciplinary action.
  • Inmates have the right to refuse visits at any time.
  • All visitors must pass through a walk through metal detector. Any visitor who exercises his or her option to refuse to comply with the required search procedures shall not be permitted to enter a correctional facility. Each visitor shall remove all metal items from clothing prior to passing through metal detector. This includes, but is not limited to; belt, jewelry (e.g, watches, chains, medals,
  • There is no expectation of privacy in a jail facility. Social visits may be monitored or recorded.

HOSPITAL VISITS

  • Inmates must be in the hospital for 7 days prior to any visits being scheduled or have the Facility Commander’s approval if under 7 days. Hospital visits must be scheduled at the Main Jail North Lobby on the same day of the visit. If approved, a visit pass will be issued, taken to the hospital and presented to the assigned Hospital Deputy.
  • Special visits may be allowed for hospitalized inmates who are considered to be in grave condition. These special visits require the approval of the Facility Commander or Assistant Division Commander.

In addition to normal visiting guidelines, the following rules apply to visits occurring in hospitals:

  •          All visits must conform to the hospital’s regular visiting hours and policies
  •          Only two visitors are allowed at a hospital visit for the duration of 30 minutes.
  •          Two visits per week are allowed, Sunday through Saturday.
  •          Inmates cannot receive items of any type from social visitors.
  •          Any deviation from the above rules requires Watch Commander approval

VISITING REGISTRATION

Adult visitors must show a current government-issued picture I.D. (Driver’s License, Green Card, Passport, Military I.D., or Mexican Consulate Card) to prove identity.

Registration may be done in person at the Main Jail, online or by mailing a paper registration form.

In Person at the Main Jail North Lobby Visiting Desk.  The Visiting Desk is open 7am-11am and 1pm-3pm on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday (closed Wednesdays).

The approval process may take up to 4 business days to complete. If you provide a valid email address, you will be sent an email to notify you of your application’s approval status.


VISITING APPLICATION STATUS

Applications to visit will be denied if:

 

·         You were in our custody within the past 60 days, excluding those booked and released on the same day.

·         You have an open or pending court case.

·         You have been convicted of a felony and served time in state prison. It is a felony to be on jail grounds without written consent from the Commander (California Penal Code 4571).

·         You were convicted of a misdemeanor within the past 3 years.

·         You have a No Contact Restraining Order involving the inmate you wish to visit.

·         You are on probation or parole.

·         You have an active warrant.

·         You are currently out on bail for an open or pending court case.

·         You have previous convictions for violence, assaultive behavior, sexual offenses or offenses committed while in custody. 

·         Any other factor that causes the Sheriff’s Office to deem granting visitation a risk to facility and staff safety and security.

 

Jail staff CANNOT legally disclose or provide further information if your application is denied.  If any of the above statements apply to you but believe you should be given special consideration, you may write a letter to the Facility Commander at the address below and explain the reasons you believe you should be approved. In your letter please include your full name, date of birth, driver’s license / ID#, your current address, telephone number. Instructions for writing a letter to the Facility Commander are here:

ATTENTION

Visitors with Felony Convictions

If you have been convicted of a felony or served time in state prison, it is a felony to be on jail grounds without written consent from the Facility Commander (California Penal Code 4571). 

To obtain written permission, send your letter to the Facility Commander at the facility the inmate is housed at:

 Include:

·         Inmate’s name & booking number 

·         Your full name

·         Your Date of Birth

·         Your Driver’s License Number

·         Information regarding what you have done since the time of your conviction to correct that mistake​ 



SCHEDULING VISITS

All visitors must be approved for inmate visiting prior to signing up for visits.  Approved visitors may schedule visits up to 2 weeks in advance but no less than one hour before a visit. Visits may be scheduled in person at the Main Jail or On-line via the OVR website:

Forgotten usernames or passwords may be obtained by requesting the information via email to Visiting.MainJail@shf.sccgov.org.  You must provide your full name, date of birth, driver’s license or ID number AND the date your ID or license was issued.


DRESS CODE RULES STRICTLY ENFORCED

All visitors must wear shoes and clothing that is appropriate for visiting. Your visit will be cancelled and you will be denied entry into the facility if these rules are not followed.  Any questions or clarification of these rules must be directed to the Information Desk Officer.

THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT ALLOWED:

·         Dresses, skirts, skirts with slits that are more than 2 inches above the knee

·         Clothing that exposes any part of the back, shoulders, chest or midriff

·         Visible undergarments

·         Transparent clothing, strapless, halter, spaghetti straps, bare midriff clothing, tank tops

·         Unfastened buttons and zippers (they must remain fastened)

·         Clothing that resembles jail / inmate clothing

·         Law Enforcement or military patterned clothing

·         Clothing or footwear containing metal

·         Hats

·         Medical attire (scrubs)

·         Attire displaying obscene or offensive language or drawings

·         Visitors with tattoos of an offensive nature, or visible gang-associated tattoos or clothing, will not be allowed to visit

·         Anything else deemed inappropriate by the Facility Commander or his/her designee will not be allowed
