The CC25 Career Development Unit (CDU) supports young adults with job search and getting on a career path. Employment Counselors with experience and expertise in the areas of job coaching and career planning can provide participants with services such as assistance with job leads, help with completing applications, preparing resumes, and interview practice. CDU also provides mentorship and guidance, continuing to support participants once they are involved in training or on the job.
Emancipated Foster Youth (EFY) Employment Program
CDU administers the Emancipated Foster Youth (EFY) Employment Program that provides eligible candidates with opportunities for county employment. Applicants are supported through the process, from completing the application to accepting a job offer. Youth who have emancipated from the child welfare system can apply for up to 21 different entry level county jobs through a modified hiring process. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the jobs to be eligible for the applicant pool.
PLEASE NOTE: At this time, due to the county-wide hiring freeze, applications are not being accepted for the EFY Program. Check back for updates.
Job Preparation Workshops and Sessions
CDU also offers job search preparation workshops to help job seekers develop a competitive edge in today’s job market. These workshops are offered in collaboration with ILP and as “stand alone” presentations. Workshop topics range from skills identification, to application completion, to making a positive first impression.
College Bridge Programs and Express Registration
Additionally, CDU works to link young adults to college and training programs, taking them through the process of enrolling in community college to get on track to train for a career. The unit works to support participants and link them to resources, helping to pave the road to success. Programs and opportunities vary from college to college.
F.L.Y.E. R.I.T.E. Drop-In Hours
Fundamental Learning Yielding Employment Ready Individuals Through Education, or FLYE RITE, is an educational and career development group being held at Sobrato House ILP Youth Center and the Gilroy Family Resource Center (GFRC). The drop-in hours are presented and hosted by the Career Development Unit. Youth and young adults can meet with Employment Counselors on a drop-in (no appointment necessary) basis to discuss individual employment needs or get help with applications, resumes, practice interviews, or job search tips. Students can drop-in if they need a quiet place to do homework, get help with assignments, or need to use a computer with internet access. Youth looking to connect to resources are also encouraged to stop by and see what is available. The overall goal of FLYE RITE is to better prepare our youth for self sufficiency through education and employment.
FLYE RITE drop-in hours for San Jose are on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at Sobrato House located at 496 South Third Street (corner of Third and Williams).
FLYE RITE drop-in hours for South County are on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at the Gilroy Family Resource Center (GFRC) located at 8833 Monterey Road
Currently, FLYE RITE is being expanded to include employer presentations that allow eligible candidates a “meet and greet” opportunity with employers. During these presentations, which are either incorporated into the FLYE RITE hours or schedule separately based on employer availability, employers will meet with small groups of candidates. The employer representatives/recruiters will provide general overviews of their company and hiring process. Depending on the employer need, applications may be accepted on site or on-the-spot interviews may be conducted. Flyers featuring information about each employer will be made available to advertise and recruit for the presentations.
In addition, plans are being developed to offer employment related resources during FLYE RITE hours. These resources may include information related to labor laws, community resources for interview/professional clothing, or information around record clearance for employment purposes. The goal is to expand these additional offerings to the South County area as well.
